Hofstra University - The Princeton Review College Rankings & Reviews (2024)

About

From the School

Hofstra University is a diverse, dynamic community where you can pursue your passions, with a greater purpose. Our classes are small, and our programs are tailored to empower students to seek, shape, and discover their own educational and career path.

Live, work, and play on a suburban campus with landscaped quads and ivy-covered buildings that's less than an hour by train from New York City, with its countless cultural, recreational, and internship opportunities.

Build leadership skills through varied clubs, organizations, and service projects. Our students log 100,000 volunteer hours every year, and Hofstra has been recognized by the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for seven consecutive years.

Hofstra University is internationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review, and PayScale College ROI and Salary Reports. We are the only university to host three consecutive U.S. presidential debates (2008, 2012, and 2016), and one of only three universities in the New York metropolitan area with schools of engineering, medicine, and law.

Our more than 10,000 students come from 51 states and territories and 88 countries, but they share an entrepreneurial spirit, a curiosity about the world, and a desire to make a difference. At Hofstra, you will be challenged, you will be supported, you will discover your best self.

You will be a world changer.

Academic Programs

Learn the art of filmmaking from an Emmy Award-winning director. Discuss economic policy with top business leaders and former Cabinet members. Debate political strategy with a former presidential candidate. Participate in faculty research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Our professors are scholars, artists, and scientists who are passionate about their work and dedicated to teaching and training the next generation of leaders.

With an average undergraduate class size of 21 and a student-faculty ratio of 13-to-1, students are encouraged to debate, question, and think critically in an open, collaborative learning environment. Ninety-one percent of our full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their respective fields.

Requirements for graduation vary among schools and majors. A liberal arts core curriculum is integral to all areas of concentration. Hofstra's academic calendar is organized in a traditional fall and spring semester system, and offers an optional January session and three optional summer sessions (between May and August).

Hofstra offers innovative programs to meet the needs of its diverse student body. These include Hofstra University Honors College, Legal Education Accelerated Program (LEAP), Hofstra 4+4 Program (a highly selective BA-BS/MD program), Physician Assistant Studies Program (a highly selective BS/MS program), and First-Year Connections.

Hofstra University Honors College students can study in any of the University's undergraduate programs and are involved in all fields of advanced study.

Students Say

There’s no denying that a strong “sense of community” coupled with a “supportive staff” guarantee that “Hofstra [is] a great place to be.” After all, the university really makes it a priority to “listen to students” and ensures that “social, academic, and personal concerns are always validated, addressed, and resolved.” Undergrads here greatly benefit from a myriad “of opportunities regarding jobs, internships, and experiential learning.” And they love that they have great “flexibility [when it comes to] courses [as well as] the ability to mix and match majors and minors.” Though Hofstra has many great academic departments, students especially like to highlight the “dual degree programs and health science fields as they have so many connections to local hospitals and have top of the art equipment and cadaver labs.” They also note the “extremely accomplished” School of Communications. With such renowned departments, it’s reasonable to expect that your professors here will “do their best to challenge [you] and get [you] ready for the real world by teaching [you] critical thinking skills and giving [you] as many opportunities as possible to apply theory to real-life situations.”

Students Say

Incoming undergraduates have no reason to be nervous when starting at Hofstra. That’s because the school has “a very welcoming student body,” one where “just about everyone is approachable and happy to help you with homework or even directions to a building.” As this individual shares, “I was drawn to Hofstra for the people, truly because everyone I met was so relaxed and happy to be here.” Most students are also “incredib[ly] hardworking, driven, and passionate about the work they do.” Fortunately, they “work together to achieve their goals. It’s not a competitive environment.” But perhaps what Hofstra undergrads appreciate most about their peers is just how diverse they are. While there are certainly a fair amount “from the Long Island/wider New York area,” you’ll definitely encounter “students from all 50 states and more than 25 other countries” as well as individuals from “all different ethnicities, cultures, religions.” Just as critical, you’re bound to discover “all sorts of people with unique interests.” Indeed, this student assures us that “no matter what your passion, you can find someone who shares it.”

Campus Life

Overview

From The School

Location

Hofstra is a global community just 25 miles east of Manhattan. Our 244-acre campus is a nationally registered arboretum with 75 outdoor sculptures that blooms with thousands of tulips every spring.

Students can choose to live in one of our 35 residence halls, each with a unique flair, community, and life of its own. We also offer 10 living-learning communities, in which students live with classmates in the same programs, or who share the same passion for leadership, health professions, or the arts.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

Connect with the real world through experiential learning in our cutting-edge facilities, including the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room; WRHU-88.7 FM, Radio Hofstra University; a big data lab; a robotics and advanced manufacturing lab; a cell and tissue engineering lab; and a Cybersecurity and Innovation Research Center. Hofstra also boasts six theaters, as well as the most historically accurate replica of Shakespeare's original Globe stage in the U.S., which is used for the University's annual Shakespeare Festival.

The David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex is a 5,023-seat arena that is home to the Hofstra Pride men's wrestling team and the men's and women's basketball teams.

Our nationally accredited museum has a permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of art.

Off-Campus Opportunities

Hofstra extends learning beyond the classroom through internship programs, a Co-op program, and study abroad opportunities. Our internship programs capitalize on the University's proximity to New York City, allowing students to gain on-the-job experience in areas such as advertising, business, entertainment, finance, and media. The Co-op program at the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science offers students paid work experience in a field related to their major.

Study abroad programs are offered in Europe, Asia, South America, and more. Students can explore the world while enhancing their college experience and earning course credits. Learn more at hofstra.edu/studyabroad.

Students Say

Undergraduates at Hofstra lead busy lives. Of course, that’s understandable given how much there is to do. The university itself “puts [forth quite an] effort to [offer] fun things for their students.” For example, “there is the Fall Fest, a carnival, special occasion meals...and other free activities.” Undergrads can also frequently attend “any activity sponsored by the honors college” like open mic nights and alumni talk-backs. Many also like hitting up screenings of “different popular movies every Fri, Sat, and Sun” that are organized for them by another student club. There are numerous additional student-run organizations including the Culinary Club and WRHU—Radio Hofstra University. Particularly impressive is the school’s TV network students can join regardless of their major. “We have our own television network called the HEAT Network, which [offers]...student-run shows, including our late-night sketch comedy show TNL, which has won a college Emmy. Hofstra’s TV program gives off real world experience that truly isn’t available at most collegiate institutions.” Additionally, “community service opportunities are easy to come by and are often exciting.” This is a popular activity and one that many agree “allow[s] the students to belong to something bigger and more important than their individual selves.” Volunteer activities include “cleaning up the streets, raking leaves, [and] food drives.” Finally, undergrads love to take advantage of Hofstra’s proximity to New York City. “With the Long Island Railroad being 15 minutes away from campus and Manhattan being a 40-minute train ride away from the Long Island, the city is extremely accessible, which makes it possible for students to enjoy a multitude of events and activities held [there].”
