Outside of the TV landscape, the twins also have a production company, Scott Brothers Entertainment, home collections (Scott Living and Drew & Jonathan Home) and a lifestyle website where they share design and home tips.
Their ventures are united by their impossible-to-fake brotherly chemistry. During the early days of making “Property Brothers,” Jonathan says the brothers were asked to deliver scripted lines. They pushed back.
“We would kind of improv a little and have fun. Sure enough, that’s what the show ended up becoming,” Jonathan says. “We didn’t need to pretend to be hosts, we needed to pretend to be ourselves.”
While Jonathan’s job title isn’t full-time magician, he says he’s found plenty of magic in what he does through the “Property Brothers” franchise.
“I’ve always loved magic. There’s something about the storytelling and the illusion that you can create and the sense of wonder. I get the same endorphins from what we do on our shows,” Jonathan says. “When we do an incredible reveal, and people walk through the door and their jaws drop and they cannot believe what we pulled off, let alone in such a short period of time — it’s the exact same thing.”
Step 4: Furnishing the interior
Through their various spinoffs and specials, the twins have introduced their family of origin — their mom, dad and brother — and the families they’re making with their significant others to the camera.
Drew, at the time of our interview, is just days away from going on paternity leave.
“I have a baby coming, you know, we’re doing some prep now,” Drew says. “They’re like, ‘Wait, but (‘Backed by the Bros’) doesn’t launch until June 5.’ I’m like, ‘That’s because in another week, I’m MIA for a month and nobody’s talking to me. I’m focused on family.”
Drew and his wife Linda announced they were going to be parents in 2021. A few months before their now-toddler Parker was born, they opened up about going through IVF and struggling with infertility. Linda had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a condition when the thyroid is overactive, and the couple was told that in their case, they were not going to be able to conceive naturally.
Nearly two years after Parker was born, the couple announced that they were expecting again.
Both Drew and Linda grew up with multiple siblings, and wanted a similar experience for their son. They used to joke about wanting a “starting lineup for a basketball team” — but they hoped, at least, for two children. “For us, it’s important to have that built-in safety net of a supportive family,” he says.
Drew says the process of getting pregnant was entirely different this time around. He and Linda had just started talking about returning to the fertility endocrinologist again, when Linda suddenly started to feel “super bloated.”
“She did four pregnancy tests and they were all positive. So we checked in (with the doctor), and she was over three months pregnant,” Drew shares, describing the news as a “mind-blowing” discovery.
“Any signs that could potentially be a ‘you’re pregnant’ sign, you just throw out the window, because you’ve been told that’s not possible ... I mean, it’s actually kind of amazing,” Drew says.
At the time of our conversation, Drew said the baby was expected to come in a few weeks. As they did with Parker, the couple doesn’t plan to know sex of their second child in advance. They want to preserve a “sense of wonder and curiosity.”
“Linda and I are not traditionalists where we’re like, ‘Parker has to dress in blue, and if we have a girl, they have to dress in pink,’” Drew explains. “Parker wears every color under the rainbow. And in fact, when I was a kid, it was the same (with me). We were twins, but Jonathan got blue for everything. I got every other color.”
Jonathan says his twin and Linda are “the most educated, amazing parents, and so the fact that they were blessed with another baby is going to be incredible.” He’s hoping to maintain his “cool uncle” status a second time around, since his nephew Parker already thinks of him as the “coolest, funniest guy he’s ever seen.”
Plus, he jokes, “It’s been the greatest social experiment in my life to see Drew realize that kids don’t care about your rules.”
Jonathan would know. He became a father figure — or, as he calls it “bonus dad” — after he started dating Zooey in 2019. Following their “Carpool Karaoke” meet-cute, she introduced him to her daughter Elsie and son Charlie from a previous marriage.
“I’m frankly no more than a chauffeur to our 7- and 8-year-olds,” Jonathan says. “They have way cooler social lives than we do.”
The couple got engaged in August 2023 after four years of dating. They haven’t finalized wedding plans yet, Jonathan says.
“The biggest priority for us is to just have a kick-ass party with our friends and family. The pomp and circ*mstance is less important for us. We’ve been together for a long time. Now we went through a pandemic. So I think that adds another 20 years to the value of your relationship,” he says.
What he does know is that their two children will play a “key part” in the wedding, as they did in the proposal. Jonathan fondly remembers the moment Elsie, who was just starting to read, helped with the surprise by holding a banner that asked Zooey to marry him.
“(Elsie) read the thing, and she saw what it said. And then the look of excitement on her face when she then turned to Zooey was pretty spectacular,” he says.
Now Charlie is gearing up for his part in the wedding. “Our son doesn’t know what a ring bearer is. He thinks that he has to walk around and hand out little mini bears to everybody. He keeps asking us to make sure we order the bears so he can be the ring bearer,” he says.
The Property Brothers made a career out of building homes for others. But they’ve created meaningful homes for themselves, too. With Drew and Jonathan in California near their parents and Linda’s sister, and JD and his family in nearby Las Vegas, Drew says they’re “surrounded” by family — which is just what they wanted.
Their entire career has been shaped and guided by a pact, one that has helped make their whole company run like a family.
“We’ll always be honest with each other. And we also agreed that we’re never going to work with a--holes. We call it the ‘No B.S.' policy," Drew says. "If you’re not a good person, I don’t want to work with you. We’ll find someone who shares our values and passion for family."
